Running has become a major part of helping me feel good—both mentally and physically. However, it’s not always easy to keep a schedule of exercising consistently on the road. If you’re planning on staying in shape while you’re abroad, there are a few things you can do in order to feel good, even if you can’t head to the gym.
1. Walk…a lot.
One of the best things about exploring a new culture is walking around a new location—it’s one way to experience life there and to get to know the people. It’s also one of the best ways to burn some calories after trying the local foods. Many cities around the world are easily walkable and offer a way to enjoy where you are without spending time in a stuffy hotel gym. Walking gets you up and out and exploring your chosen destination.
2. Be active.
There are many other ways to enjoy a place and still manage to get some exercise in. Rent a kayak for an afternoon or ask where they local trails are so that you can hike when the weather is nice. I always like to see if there is a unique activity that is particular to the location that I can try out. In Iceland, I went underground and hiked inside a volcanic tube, while in Morocco I hiked up the side of a sand dune. It only added to my experience of being in that place and got me sweating.
3. Take advantage of a gym when you have one.
While if you are only on a short vacation, it probably won’t matter much if you skip a few days at the gym. However, if you are planning on being on the road for weeks or months on end, taking advantage of a gym isn’t always a bad idea. Some hotels have them available to travelers, and many offer day passes so you can stop by when you have time. These days at the gym can help you maintain and can help you remain focused on your fitness goals.
It’s often the little things that can help you stay in shape when traveling. Even if you can’t make it a daily habit, fitting exercise every now and then can make a huge difference and can help you to feel like you’re doing something good for your body.
